Parks, Gardens and Riverside strolls

Stretch your legs by the water with a river or lakeside stroll or take in some manicured scenery in some of the beautiful parks and gardens open to the public on the route.

Some of the walks suggested below focus on nature and the scenic beauty of the river while others incorporate historical sites and other points of interest. Most of these walks are wheelchair and buggy/stroller friendly.

Vandeleur Walled Gardens, Kilrush, Clare

These beautiful gardens have a fascinating history dating back three centuries. Today the gardens are sure to delight and surprise those who visit.

Three Bridges Walk, Limerick City

A riverside stroll in Limerick City takes in the beauty of the river and it’s bird life as well as some stunning historical sights such as King Johns Castle, St Mary’s Cathedral, The Hunt Museum, the Court house, Thomond Bridge, Sarsfield Bridge and the Treaty Stone. Guided walks of Georgian Limerick and well as the riverside area are also available with Limerick City Walking Tours and Limerick Civic Trust.

University of Limerick Walks, Limerick

The University of Limerick is located approximately 4km to the east of Limerick City and the Shannon River flows through the campus. Enjoy a tree lined walk by the banks of the river or travel over the longest pedestrian bridge in Ireland (350m), the Living Bridge. This modern curved bridge was constructed by the same company that built the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty.

Aistear Park, Mountshannon

This 4.5 acre harbourside park on the shores of Lough Derg includes a maze which explores the 9000 year journey of Irish Spirituality. The park also contains a children’s playground, adult exercise equipment, a picnic area and tourist information.

Portumna Castle Gardens, Portumna

Visit the beautiful gardens of Portumna Castle with it’s formal geometrical garden and 17th century potager kitchen garden. A variety of different types of willow tree are used in the Willow Maze which also incorporates lavender plants and fruit trees.

Shannon Banks Nature Trail, Athlone, Westmeath

Enjoy this lovely riverside looped walk starting in Athlone town. Enjoy stunning views and abundant wildlife while you stroll along.

Carrick-on-Shannon Boardwalk & Marina, Leitrim

The historic town of Carrick-on-Shannon has many beautiful buildings and structures of interest. However, the walk along the river boardwalk and along the quays is well worth making a stop for.
